Tidbits from the life of a Pastoral Care Pastor

Wednesday August 4, 2010
This morning, after being awakened by my alarm clock (as usual) and needing to go outside, I found myself wondering and thinking of what heaven would be like as we walked along the path so she could take care of business. I was also yearning to go there and be with Jesus. I prayed for Him to come quickly and sort out all this “good and evil” that we seem to struggle within our own selves. Yes, you read correctly, the good we struggle with as well as the evil. We as Christians, after being saved by grace, want to constantly add “works”, good works of course, to make us feel better about our walk with Jesus our Lord. In my position as pastor I see so much of this among our people and not enough falling “head over heels” in love with Him. If we could only remember that Satan’s job description is to “kill, steal and destroy” and our battle is not against each other (being against flesh and blood) it is with him and his little demons I truly believe we would do much better. Awhile back I started reading a book listing the 100 most important events in Christian history and before I opened the book I assumed the very first one would be Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. But it wasn’t and it was over half way through that it dawned on me that “Christian” is something we as humans “dreamed up” and was never the intent of our Lord to come and start another “religion.” He came to show us how to get into the Kingdom of God. He actually destroyed the “religion” of His day and pointed us to the correct way to God without religion. Amazing isn’t it how our “good works” always leads us away from God instead of towards Him.
On another more personal note I have been very busy these last few weeks since my last entry. I have had weddings each weekend with two funerals as well since the second weekend of July. Weddings are always nice and I really enjoy being a part of uniting the couple and starting them on their journey of becoming joined together as one. A couple of weekends ago I conducted one outside a few feet from the water’s edge in 110 degree heat plus the heat index. I thought my bible was going to melt, but even the heat couldn’t dampen the joy witnessed in the faces of the couple uniting their lives together and starting this journey with God’s blessings’. I still have the month of August filled with journeys just like this and even some into October. What a joy it is to serve God this way.
Finished reading a book by Dr. David Reagan titled, Eternity. I highly recommend it too each of you reading this blog entry. It is just off the presses in July and you can find in at his web address of www.lamblion.com You will not be disappointed.

Books Currently Reading: Leading on Empty by Wayne Cordeiro; The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History

Current Bible Readings / Studies: I am currently reading and doing some studying in Amos. This minor prophet was a vigorous spokesman for God’s justice and righteousness.

Devotions: Still currently reading through the bible with a program that chronologically lays out the scriptures in the sequence they occurred or more likely to have occurred.
